Find a girl who reads and date her. A girl like that exists and a girl like that is gold. Easy. This is not a trap.
There’s a reason why men are called the opposite sex. Women think with their hearts, following an innate sense of judgement and intuition. Men employ logic and straightforward rationality to make decisions. Opposites attract. So if you think you are man enough with a level head for crisis, go find a girl who reads and date her.
You see that bizarre chick snuffling the pages of an old book along your way home? That’s the reader. She can never resist smelling the pages especially when they are worn and yellow. You would thought she is weird, but she is.
On weekends you see her strolling down the street with a book on her left hand and an umbrella on the other as she enter a coffee shop. Five minutes later you decided to peek in. You will see her coffee untouched because she was already engrossed and lost in her universe.
Sit down and be gentle. She’ll give you a glare because she thinks you’re a maniac and she doesn’t want to be interrupted. Smile and ask if she likes the book. She might roll her eyes so buy her another cup of coffee because her coffee is already cold. She’ll appreciate the gesture. Talk.
You’ll know that she reads because she’ll stick her eyes and bend her neck one hundred and thirty five degrees on your first date. She is the one lovingly looking over the shelves scanning through the pages when you decided to enter the bookstore. The one who jumps up and down when she saw its on sale and quietly cries out because she has found the book she is dying to read.
She is a girl with bones. She could be trouble but she thinks before making one. Yes, she spends money more than you but she spends it on books and not on clothes. Her closet is her bank filled with too many books and you might be annoyed because there’s no space for you anymore.
“Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.”
“Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because a girl who read understand that all things must come to end, but one can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.”
Let her know that you understand her world and her words are love. Know her favorite book and read it. She’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book and it will never be your fault if she does. She has to give it a shot anyways.
If you find her, understand that her gifts are words, poetry and song. Understand that she is an astronaut. Be her space and make her your Comet. You will find her clutching a book at 1 AM, power weeping. Hold her and tell her she still look good when she cries. Her tears won’t dry and she may be lost for a while but she’ll come back.
In the morning she’ll talk like the characters were real, because for a while, they are. You smile to yourself wondering why your heart hasn’t burst its fireworks out of your chest yet. You knew you found her. The girl who reads.
If you could only give her ennui, then you are better off alone. But you are better than that.
A girl who reads is gold. She is fine spending time on her own. She’s empathetic. She’s a critical thinker. She’s someone you can talk through a tough decision with, and know she’ll give real thought to all the moving parts. She has stronger analytic skills. She is equipped to assess a situation and find the right solution. She has a sense of perspective. She’s easily entertained. She’ll be able to teach you things. She’s curious. She is hungry for more out of life — more stories, more information, more experiences. She’s probably a good listener. She’s easy to buy gifts for. Ha! She has a great memory for detail. She’s involved in the world. She’ll probably encourage you to pick up a book yourself, so you can reap all the benefits reading has to bring because reading next to each other in bed is so much better than playing Candy Crush. No more fighting over the TV remote. She’s probably the best lover ever. Gossips doesn’t feature in her dictionary at all. She is one kick ass person who lives in reality. Intelligence turns her on. She doesn’t ponder over her figure all the time. She loves to eat, drink and rave. She’s an adventurer at heart — literally. And of course, She is always, always in love.
Date a girl who reads because you deserve it.
Better yet, date a girl who writes.
